During his college years from 1960 to 1964, Manny set a new standard of excellence at WMU, averaging 32.7 points per game and concluding his athletic career with an impressive 1,787 points. Notably, he broke the existing scoring record by over 500 points in 1964, a record he held for more than 45 years. His prowess on the court reached its pinnacle during his senior year when he led the nation in scoring. In recognition of his athletic contributions, WMU retired his #5 jersey, which is now displayed proudly in the WMU Basketball Arena.
Manny’s contributions to basketball extend beyond his college years. He was a First Team “All Mid American Conference” selectee during his sophomore, junior, and senior years. He was also chosen for the “All America” Basketball Team in the 1963-1964 season and participated in the U.S. Olympic Trials Basketball Team in 1964. His exceptional skills and impact on the game have been honored through his induction into multiple halls of fame: the Western Michigan University Basketball Hall of Fame in 1974, the Mid American Conference Basketball Hall of Fame in 1988, and the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 1994.
Manny not only excelled on the court but also in the classroom. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education in 1964 and went on to complete a Master of Science Degree in Physical Education in 1965, both from WMU. Following his athletic career, he took on a role in the Office of Financial Aid at WMU, serving as a Financial Aid Counselor and Field Representative. His academic journey continued at Indiana State University, where he served as Assistant Dean of Students and earned his Ph.D. in Counseling & Psychological Services in Higher Education in 1976.
Manny’s distinguished career in higher education includes serving as the Dean of Students at the University of Toledo from 1976 to 1988. He also completed postdoctoral studies at Harvard University in 1987, receiving a certificate in Management and Development in Higher Education. Before his retirement, he was the Vice President of Student Affairs at Florida Atlantic University from 1988 to 2006, where he continues to educate as a professor in the College of Education.
Above all, Manny’s life work reflects his deep commitment to mentoring the next generation. His invaluable experience, coupled with a genuine passion for youth and young adults, enables him to guide students in achieving their dreams both in athletic and academic settings.
