High School Achievements
Upon his graduation in 1983, Newsome not only left as the all-time leading scorer in the history of Toledo High School basketball but also clinched the title of Most Valuable Player in the illustrious Ohio North-South High School All-Star Basketball game. These accomplishments paved the way for his inclusion in both the Toledo Rogers High School Basketball Hall of Fame and the Toledo, OH Basketball Hall of Fame.
Collegiate Excellence
At Miami of Ohio University, Newsome was part of two MidAmerican Conference championship teams in the 1983-84 and 1985-86 seasons, as well as a runner-up team in 1984-85. Alongside five-time NBA champion Ron Harper, Newsome achieved a record of 69 wins against 23 losses over three consecutive seasons, capturing two NCAA at-large bids and one automatic tournament bid. Holding the title of the second all-time leading scorer in Miami of Ohio basketball history, Newsome also boasts a single home game scoring record with 40 points against Evansville University in December 1987.
Academic Milestones
Complementing his athletic prowess, Newsome secured a Bachelor’s Degree in Consumer Science in 1987, followed by a Master’s Degree in Sports Administration in 1992, both from Miami of Ohio University.
Professional Basketball Tenure
Transitioning to a professional basketball career, Newsome was invited to the Cleveland Cavaliers Veteran Camp in 1988. He also participated in the San Antonio Spurs LA Pro-Summer League team in the same year and was later invited to the Pre-Veteran camp in 1994. Crucially, he took to the courts in the NBA G League (formerly CBA) from 1988-1990, playing for the Tulsa Fast Breakers and the Columbus Horizon.
Career Beyond Athletics
Upon retiring from competitive basketball, Newsome transitioned into a variety of professional roles, serving as a Social Worker for the State of Florida and Assistant Athletic Director at Florida Atlantic University. He also founded E-NEW Enterprises, a Sales & Marketing Company.
Coaching and Mentorship
Simultaneously, Newsome has committed over 22 years to coaching and mentoring on the High School and AAU levels. His resume includes coaching at Westlake Prep High School in Davie, FL, and leading notable AAU teams like Amar’e Stoudemire’s “Each 1 Teach 1” and Dwayne Wade’s “Wade Elite.”
Educational Advocacy
In 2019, he launched what is now College Bound Athletes, Inc., a nonprofit post-graduate basketball academy. The organization is committed to Higher Education, Leadership Development, and Community Engagement, and has successfully sent over 50 players to college on full basketball scholarships. It also claimed the “Phenom Hoops” Post Graduate Basketball National Championships in 2022 and 2023.
Current Endeavors
Today, Coach Newsome continues to serve as the Head Coach for Calusa Prep High School in Miami, FL, and the College Bound Athletes (CBA Prep) Post Graduate Basketball Team.
